Description

When Marjorie makes the tough decision to downsize from the house she and her husband raised their kids into an apartment in a retirement community she is faced with unsettling new emotions.

The change is harder than she expected. Her new apartment at Rose Court Living is pleasant, but everything feels unfamiliar. She gets through her first days with a forced smile while trying to settle in, but she’s carrying an unease about her new chapter.

One afternoon, while unpacking a small box of keepsakes she brought from home, Marjorie discovers an envelope she hasn’t seen in decades. It’s a letter she wrote to her childhood best friend, Lila, who moved away. It was more than sixty years ago, but she never sent the letter. The letter is full of exciting plans for a summer when Lila would come to visit. She can’t remember at first why she never sent the letter, but all the plans bring back memories that become a source of comfort.

The old letter gives her the idea to try and find Lila and send her a letter reminiscing about the past and sharing her life from the years in between.

This feel-good story is from our hi-lo (high interest/low reading level) line for older adults starting to experience cognitive impairments such as dementia.
